We arrived the day before Christmas and after a day of rest and a Christmas dinner at a local restaurant, we experienced one of the highlights of trip. Namely, the Bahamian festival called Jankanoo. Jankanoo was originally started when slave owners gave a day off once a year to their slaves. In order to make the most of this day, the festivities were started at 3 in the morning and the tradition continues today. We were awakened by the loud sound of drums almost two miles away from our boat and could not resist dinghying into town at 4 a.m. Soon we found ourselves dancing and clapping behind one of the many festive groups. The Marti Gras-like processions each involved themes and are judged at the end of festivities in the morning. The drumming and dancing were quite intense, continuing nonstop from 3 a.m. until 7 or 8 in the morning. We were very moved by the wonderful celebration of life that Junkanoo expressed.
